ZMF HOLDS WORKSHOPS FOR PARTNERS

Zambia Malaria Foundation Held a Training workshop with its Partner in Lusaka at the Fresh Air House. The Workshop was on Coordination, Collaboration and Networking. It placed emphasis on networking. Members were taken in networking stages and how best partners can contribute. The consultant who facilitated Kalila Chellah emphasized the need for partners not to just look at the benefits they will gain but what can the do for the network. Members of the network should understand their roles and also networks should bring about value. The Network should improve interventions, enhanced capacity in organization and also at individual levels. Partners should be  realistic in resource sharing and that a network is a member driven set up. The attendance might have not being impressive but yet achieved its purpose. The Organizations that participated were: RAPIDS, Zambia Scout Association, Project Support Zambia, Kafue Youth Community, Chelston Community Group, DHMT, PUSH. The workshop was so exciting and the partners participated freely expressing their concerns of which were clarified by the Executive Director for Zambia Malaria Foundation. The partners appreciated the work that ZMF is doing despite the resource constraints. It would be important to see that many partners are involved in the contribution. Many partners have not been not contributed much in information sharing when there was a tool that would shows what they are doing. The E-news created was to have news on the activities that the partners are doing.

The Zambia Malaria Foundation also held a second workshop in  Kitwe on the Copperbelt.   The Executive Director for Zambia Malaria Foundation who went round to explain the plan that ZMF has for all the partners was without doubt one of the achievements that has being pending for a long time. The partnership is important and so need for collaborated efforts if the fight against malaria is to be won.

Laura Bush and Bill Clinton Visit Zambia

This year is yet another big year in the advocacy for HIV/AIDS and Malaria. Realizing that the two can not be totally separated in this age; it calls for consolidated efforts that will help in interventions that have impacts on the people and the social-economy of the nation. Laura Bush (First lady of the America) visited Zambia on the 28th June 2007, whose visit was to highlight programmes funded by President's Emergency Plan on AIDS Relief and President's Malaria Initiative. Mrs. Bush lauded the partnerships formed between the U.S. and Zambia to address malaria, a treatable and preventable disease that claims more than a million lives every year. She praised Zambia for running an ambitious national malaria control program through effective new medicines, increased use of mosquito sprays and bed nets, saying the country is making great strides against the disease. She said Zambia's anti-malaria efforts are supported by the U.S. government through the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative, a five-year programme with one goal: eliminating malaria in Africa. In partnership with the National Malaria-Control Program, the initiative will help conduct indoor residual spraying, provide life-saving bed nets and medicines and to treat pregnant women who are especially vulnerable.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton visit was on 21st and 22nd July. Mr. Clinton toured a drug distribution warehouse Medical Stores Limited in Zambia, where his humanitarian foundation is supporting efforts to fight HIV and AIDS. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton on Sunday (23rd July) launched a pilot program to make subsidized malaria drugs available in Tanzania. The project will enable patients in Tanzania to buy life-saving ACT (artemisinin combination therapy) drugs 90 percent cheaper than the current market price. Mr. Clinton told reporters near Tanzania's capital, Dar Es Salaam, no one should die of malaria. The sickness, caused by a parasite carried by mosquitoes, kills three million people globally.

Text Box: Malaria 'NAS' Musical Concert
The fight against Malaria  is still intensifying with more popular and influential people are joining in ensuring that battle is won. It is in anticipation that the tour of 11 country by one of the American Hip/Hop artist star Nas, through United Nations with the concern of raising fund that will help in the fight against Malaria. "Nas" the Def/Jam Universal Records headed by Mr. Sean Carter better known as (Jay-Z) will be at the ham of the performances, this has being driven by the concerns that were raised by the Zambia Malaria Foundation Executive Director which were quoted in the July 2007edition National geographical magazine. The Zambia Malaria Foundation Executive Director was contacted by Mr. Ronnie Goodman (Nas's manager) who had read the story in the National Geographical Magazine July edition on malaria in Zambia. Mr. Goodman was moved and felt he needed to contribute to the fight against malaria and thus proposed to organize an 11 African Nation country music tour to raise money and awareness for the fight against malaria. So far the plans are: 1. Nas and many other famous artist will have a concert at Madison Square Garden (US) on 15th September 2007 and would announce his tour then. 2. Possibly an album with special guest vocals from the range of celebrities.
The date for the tour can roughly be said from between 1st October and 15 November 2007. This shows how much people have realized that malaria is a threat to our well being even when it can be prevented and treated. More in the next e-news letter.
