The Zambia Malaria Foundation was born out of the 2002 Ndola Fresh Air Workshop. Fresh Air – so named as a hopeful contrast to early European beliefs that malaria (mal aria, literally “bad air”) was caused by the tropical air -- was a conference showcasing the latest in anti-malarial treatment, prevention, and research. aegis of the Child Survival Collaborations and Resources (CORE) Group.
 

An outcome of the Ndola conference was a call for 

a coordinating body – a secretariat – to help  organize

 the efforts by and partnerships of public and private sectors

and NGOs/FBOs to roll back malaria.

 

Such coordination and partnerships can help all programmes

 and organizations to be more efficient and effective.

Similar secretariats have been set up in Kenya, Tanzania,

 and Uganda
